In this second painting of Adam, a barn painter in Tennessee, I wanted to catch his strength and self containment, as though he had some amazing symphony going on that only he could hear. First washes were on the figure, then some bold, seat-of-the-pants red strokes. I could have stopped there, but I wanted more, wanted to show the strength and the music. I wanted it so badly, in fact, that the shapes and colors just poured out of my brush, and song was born of color.
