It was a small place, tucked away in Fort Bragg, California’s working harbor out of sight of Highway One’s steady stream of tourists. The light caught me first, snared in the wispy glory of his beard, limning her plain corduroy clothes. Then I saw the way it hooked them together, still sharing the same side of the table after all these years. It spoke to me of trust, the kind built up over a lifetime, rooted in a thousand choices, big and small, that all came out the same: I choose you.
