Plein aire is always a challenge. Some sessions, though, are more challenging than most. This was one of those days: soft and misty to well into the morning, then suddenly full of sun and shadow and bright, hard colors. The trouble is, if my painting is half finished when the sun breaks out, I’m already committed to soft and misty. I hadn’t even used my pen because the black ink would have been too harsh for a wet, gray day. The colors snuck in, though, and I was hard put to maintain the softness. In the end, what I actually captured was that fleeting few minutes when the sun first breaks through the clouds. I love plein aire.
