This young character actor at an historically accurate village had the most soulful eyes. He reminded me of harder, simpler times when people understood that they are tiny and mother nature is huge, and how it feels to be struck dumb by awe in the face of a force bigger and greater than they can comprehend. I almost didn’t paint him because of the period dress since so many people are no longer close to the earth, but he wouldn’t let me go. One day I realized that if I painted him in context, it would work. Besides, the light-dark-light patterns of the hand-hewn fences were to die for. I had to paint him.
