Florals & Still Lifes
I have always been attracted to flowers, not just for their brilliant color and freshness, but because they have faces. It took me several years to figure that out, but my painting self always knew: flowers are emotional. The callas I paint are always self-portraits, and certain flowers signify particular people or relationships to me.
My favorite paper for florals is Saunders Waterford Rough, from 140# up to 300#. It has a soft finish, yet is extremely workable, and will take quite a bit of lifting and abuse. Richeson Series 7000 Watermedia Brushes (Quiller Brushes) - 1 1/2” and 3/4” flats work best for their versatility & the looseness they encourage.
