I actually started this in Mary Moquin's wonderful Master Painters class because "Send in the Clowns" didn’t come close to the picture I had in my mind. This happens sometimes, so I began again. I had intended to paint in a dark background around the callas, incorporating the squares of color so some of them emerged into the foreground while others did not. Eventually, I stepped back and said, "Wow. That white background is perfect," and stopped right there after balancing it out for the finish.
It was a lighter, happier painting evocative of an entirely different time in my life. I called it "Clowns". Eventually, I returned to "Send in the Clowns", but that is another story.
